CNL Track

Clinical Nurse Leader Track

The Clinical Nurse Leader (CNL) is a generalist prepared at the Master's degree level. In practice, the CNL oversees the care coordination of a distinct group of patients and actively provides direct client care in complex situations. The CNL puts evidence-based practice into action to ensure that clients benefit from the latest innovations in health care delivery. The CNL evaluates client outcomes, assesses cohort risk, and has the decision-making authority to change care plans when necessary. The CNL is a leader on the multidisciplinary healthcare team. Given the innovative and emerging nature of the CNL role, the implementation of this role will vary across settings.

The CNL student will have clinical experiences that develop and enhance clinical skills pertaining to nurse sensitive indicators for quality of care, healthcare finance, team coordination, and outcome identification and management. Clinical experiences will be individually designed to complement professional role development toward achievement of the CNL roles. Partnerships have been developed with local healthcare institutions in a collaborative effort with the Department of Nursing in order to design, implement and evaluate clinical experiences that highlight the unique healthcare roles that the CNL student will explore.

The role of the Clinical Nurse Leader has been initiated nationwide through an effort of the American Association of Colleges of Nursing. More information regarding the CNL can be found on the AACN website at: http://aacn.nche.edu/cnl .

The CNL curriculum builds upon foundational nursing knowledge and allows the learner to synthesize and apply critical concepts from the following content areas:
